BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The Comite River cleaning project has been underway for about a month now and huge progress has been made.

According to East Baton Rouge officials, a total of over 1,600 tons of debris was removed from the waterway. This accomplishment covers about 3.75 miles of the 56-mile river.

“With every ton of material removed from the Comite River, we are one step closer to a safer and more resilient community,” said Mayor Sharon Weston-Broome. “The progress we have achieved thus far is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the teams involved in this critical project. We remain committed to enhancing our drainage system and protecting our residents from potential flooding risks.”

This project was created to enhance the drainage systems in East Baton Rouge Parish and ensure the well-being of the community.

City-parish officials are looking forward to getting a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to continue clearing the Comite River.
