GONZALES, La. (BRPROUD) — The director of an animal rescue center in Gonzales is taking it into his own hands to help more kittens in need.

We’ve all heard of regular strikes but how about a hunger strike to help provide a forever home for these furry friends? Well that’s what Jonathan Henriques, founder of the nonprofit, Rescue Alliance, is currently doing.

Henriques is putting his food needs on the back burner and prioritizing his love of kittens.

As of 10 a.m. on Thursday, Henriques started his hunger strike and has been fueling his body with water. So far a little over $1,000 has been raised, with a final goal of $2,000.

“We’ve got a steady influx of more kittens coming in. The sooner we can get them fixed, vaccinated and microchipped and get them out of here, then we’re ready for the next wave to come in,” said Henriques.

His wife Danyell Henriques was quite surprised but also not surprised when she heard about his challenge. She said her husband loves food but understands where the sacrifice is coming from.

“I know he loves to eat, with him vowing to not eat until he raises the money. I know this is basically just part of his passion. And it’s just something that he loves to do. He wants to make sure that they get the best treatment that they deserve,” said Danyell Henriques.

Rescue Alliance, is a nonprofit in Gonzales that rescues kittens and cats and provides a forever home for them.

Henriques says the nonprofit runs on donations and provides a safe place for furry friends. It is in need of more space, which is why he needs funds to fix the kittens.

“We’ve got the steady influx of more kittens coming in. The sooner we can get them fixed, vaccinated and microchipped and get them out of here, then we’re ready for the next wave to come in,” he said.

Henriques says the community support means a lot to the rescue center and emphasized that all of the funds will make an impact.

“The $2,000 in literally covers everything from deworming, to the spay neuter, the vaccinations and the microchip,” he said.
