BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Chanting “all learners matter” and holding signs with messages to support local campuses, educators and administrators of St. Helena Parish united as one for an educator sick out day.
All this was following a failed tax measure that aimed for more literacy support, dual enrollment opportunities and support for employee retention.
“It is time that our community and certainly the parish supports our teachers, supports the community, supports our school system. And so that’s why we’re here. We’re here to say yes to our children and we need for our community to say yes with us,” said St. Helena Parish School District Superintendent Kelli Joseph.
Uniting with educators for a call to action, Joseph said the district is tired of fighting for resources and opportunities for children.
“It is time that our community recognizes the efforts that they put in every single day with all of the issues that and the challenges that we face, the lack of access and opportunity to do the things that other kids in other school systems have with no issue,” said Joseph. “Our teachers work hard.”
Principal of the St. Helena Early Learning Center Rushetta Felder said the overall message is to give the tax measure a second thought.
“If you want an effective community and effective employees in your business, just rethink St. Helena,” said principal of the St. Helena Early Learning Center Rushetta Felder.
After a call to action in front of the St. Helena school board building, educators in attendance marched their way to the Greensburg Market.
In an official notice of school cancellation to community members, the district says they do not know if school will be canceled on Tuesday and will keep parents posted online.
