BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Some Kia and Hyundai owners have now been blacklisted from one insurance company, temporarily, all thanks to a TikTok challenge.

State Farm said certain models are vulnerable to being stolen. That means if you already have a policy, the cost could climb. Videos posted to TikTok showed how to break into these cars.
Certain models made between 2015 and 2021 have deficiencies that make it easier to steal.

“This is a serious problem impacting our customers and the entire auto insurance industry,” said Sevag Sarkissian with public affairs at State Farm. “We take seriously our responsibility to manage risk and the impact of excess claim costs on all our customers. In this case, it became necessary to take action to protect our policyholders and our business.”

“The Louisiana Department of Insurance is here to help,” explained Ron Henderson, deputy commissioner of Louisiana Insurance. “Well, we have some issues that we can affect. This doesn’t have to be one of them at the moment. At this point, there’s nothing else to be done because it is an underwriting guideline for the companies.”

The change went into effect on Jan. 25.
