BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – It’s Teacher Appreciation Week! A week to celebrate and support educators for all that they do.
Teachers are the backbone of our community, and some say they deserve more. That’s why we are highlighting seven teachers through East Baton Rouge Parish.
Donna Collins has been teaching second-grade math since 1992. She says what keeps her motivated are the students and their growth. Collins believes a way you can honor teachers is by making sure parents and teachers continue to work together to better the child.
Ashley Gaubert is the teacher of the year at the Baton Rouge Center for Visual and Performing Arts Center. She has been teaching fourth-grade math for five years straight because seeing children’s smiles every morning inspires her. She wants people to give back to her this week by continuing to support teachers and understanding the things they face on a daily basis.
Math teacher Jordan Malensek says even on her birthday, she comes to school and teaches because it is her favorite thing to do. Receiving birthday cards and gifts not only lifts the students up but her as well.
Science and social studies teacher Paula Wolfe agrees. After teaching for more than 20 years with different age groups from the age of two to 20, she says being able to be a child’s cheerleader helps her continue her fight as a teacher.
Kindergarten teacher Kelli Rayburn has been teaching since 1999, making this year her 23rd year. She wants parents and community members to support teachers more by standing up with them whether that’s at the polls or in the classroom.
Site coordinator Sydney Hebert says we could never give them what they are truly worth but words of affirmation are a start. She believes that the world could not do anything without teachers and their support.
