Overview
A surface low over Northeastern Texas will be moving southeastwards and over the lower Mississippi Valley into Sunday. This will swing a cold front down over our area from the north. With this cold front, some shower and thunderstorm activity will be possible during the day. The best area for rain coverage and severe potential will be Southern Mississippi and east of the I-55 corridor. An isolated strong to severe storm or two will be possible on the tail end of this front during the afternoon.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed most of our area under a marginal risk (1/5) and a slight risk (2/5) for severe weather. The slight risk is over our more northeastern areas.
Behind this cold front, cooler and drier air will move in with highs in the 60s and lows getting down into the 40s.
Threats: Damaging wind gusts with the stronger storms will be the main concern and there is the potential for some severe hail. The tornado threat is low, but non-zero. Flooding is not a concern with rain totals only less than 1/4″ expected. Rain totals could be locally higher from any single thunderstorm.
Timing: The cold front will begin to enter our SW MS counties just after noon with some shower and isolated storm activity. The line will progress southward through the afternoon before beginning to exit our region around 10pm. Some showers could linger behind the front as well.
How to Prepare
Be sure to multiple ways to receive weather alerts and stay tuned to updated forecasts during the day. Make sure your phone is unmuted, charged, and turned on for WEA notifications.
Have a plan and a safe place to go to if a warning is issued for your location. Find a lower-level, interior room away from windows. Secure outdoor furniture and decor beforehand.
