A sweeping relief bill passed through Congress in late 2021 promised communities billions of dollars for new infrastructure — a promise that’s now being realized.
A new website unveiled Wednesday by Gov. John Bel Edwards’ office aims to help Louisianans understand how that money is flowing to their towns, cities and parishes.
The site lets users peruse an interactive map of Louisiana and view projects sorted by categories like clean energy, ports and waterways and “resilience” infrastructure. And it sorts localities by income level, showing projects in disadvantaged, partially disadvantaged and not disadvantaged areas.
The new digital map shows a total of 461 projects underway across Louisiana. They range from a well-plugging effort in the northernmost reaches of Caddo Parish to a $25 million ferry project in lower Plaquemines Parish along the Gulf of Mexico.
Two members of Louisiana’s congressional delegation — Rep. Troy Carter, D-Baton Rouge, and Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-Baton Rouge — voted for the so-called Bipartisan Infrastructure law that ushered the windfall of spending into Louisiana.
Others in the state’s delegation touted investments the bill would bring Louisiana after voting against the legislation.
Edwards in a statement called the infusion of federal money from the so-called Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill a “once in a lifetime investment.”
