For its pre-NCAA tournament hype video, LSU aimed for the top of the fame food chain.
Who did it get to do the narration? How about international film star Samuel L. Jackson.
Even Tigers guard Flau’Jae Johnson, a rap music star in her own right, was taken aback.
“That was insane,” Johnson said Thursday. “I was like, ‘Who is this? Samuel L.?’ ”
How did the star of “Pulp Fiction,” “Django Unchained” and “Snakes on a Plane” (Johnson’s favorite of his movies) wind up doing the LSU voice over?
The connection is through LSU senior guard Jasmine Carson, or more specifically, her grandmother Gale Jones Carson, a vice-president with Memphis Light, Gas and Water in her hometown in Tennessee.
“He’s a family friend,” Carson said. “She met him along the way at several things.”
LSU women’s basketball publicist Grant Kauvar asked Carson to reach out to Jackson to see if he would do the video. Once he agreed, Cody Worsham, associate athletic director and chief brand officer, wrote a script. Carson sent it to Jackson, who sent back the completed audio track.
After that, Sheldon Lee, assistant director of post-production for the athletic department’s South Stadium Productions creative team, put Jackson’s words to a montage of video clips of the campus, current and former great LSU players and of course, popular coach Kim Mulkey.
“Once I got it in my hands I was like, ‘I’ve got to make it happen,’ ” Lee said.
The video, which LSU posted Wednesday, has been racking up the views like Angel Reese pulling down rebounds.
“I think it’s a great video,” Carson said. “It’s motivated us even more. It’s meant for us to go far in March.”
