A national chain that specializes in selling calzones near college campuses is set to open a location by LSU this fall.
D.P. Dough has applied for a permit to open a location at 3272 Highland Road, in a drive-through only space that had been occupied by Smoothie King.
Jason Griffin, director of franchise development, said D.P. Dough has about 60 locations, most near college campuses such as the University of Georgia, Clemson University and Ohio State University. The chain has two locations in New Orleans: one in the French Quarter and one on Freret Street.
Akshaykumar Solanki, the franchisee who operates the New Orleans D.P. Dough’s, will run the LSU restaurant.
“LSU has been on our radar for quite a long time,” he said.
D.P. Dough sells calzones stuffed with meats and veggies such as steak, chicken, pepperoni, mushrooms, tomatoes and eggplant. The business also sells chicken wings, tater tots and breadsticks.
The restaurant caters to the late night college crowd, offering deliveries until 4 a.m., seven days a week.
About 15 people will work at the restaurant. This will be the first D.P. Dough with a drive through, Griffin said.
Solanki is looking at opening more D.P. Dough locations in Louisiana, in markets such as Lafayette.
