BAKER, La. (BRPROUD) – After tornadoes ripped through Rolling Fork, Mississippi, leaving several residents without resources and homes, the American Red Cross and other volunteers stepped in to help. Some volunteers are from the City of Baker.

“We’re going to leave out on Wednesday, and they’re going to go and unload it and we’re going to come back, if they need more, we’re going to fill up another truck and we’re going to keep running it until they say don’t come back,” Darnell Waites said.

Waites is Baker’s mayor. He’s been serving the city for over five years. East Baton Rouge District 2 Councilwoman Rochelle Dunn came to him with the idea of giving back to Mississippi. He quickly approved and they began to gather food donations with the help of others.

Dunn has teamed up with the City of Baker firefighters to get those donations and amenities out to victims. Councilwoman Dunn said the support will always be mutual.

“When we flooded, we had a lot of people that supported and came out and gave back to us, so it’s our turn now to reach back and give back,” said Dunn.

The Cajun Navy stepped in to help by bringing a trailer with food already packed inside to the Baker Fire Department’s office. With some of these amenities, the department will cook a hot meal for victims and they plan on bringing different food trucks with them.

All donations are welcomed and can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 3701 Groom Rd.
