BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD)– A $250,000 donation from Community Coffee is going to help those who were affected by the recent tornado in Mississippi. The Salvation Army of the Greater Baton Rouge Area is using that donation for cleaning supplies, food, fluids, and other personal items.

“There’s always times when people need us the most and we pride ourselves in saying that help is on the way. Whenever you see these vehicles behind us coming into town,” The Salvation Army Captain Brian Hicks said. Those vehicles are called Salvation Army Van Response Units.

A Salvation Army Volunteer, Matthew James has been involved since 2020. For the first time, he’s being deployed for disaster relief. He says he just wants to bring hope to other people’s lives.

“People that are out there, they’ve lost their homes, they’ve lost their livelihood, lost everything. We have to take that time to be able to reach out. And remember, we can be the helping hand to pick somebody else up. And that’s what we’re here for,” James said.

People might have lost a lot but one thing they do have is their community to lean on in times of need.

“We cannot do what we do in this community without the help of the community. Everything that the community gives to us is put right back into what we do on a daily basis,” Hicks said.
