DENHAM SPRINGS, La. (BRPROUD) — As Denham Springs officer, Cpl. Shawn Kelly remains in critical condition, the community shows their support by selling lunch plates to pay toward Cpl. Kelly’s medical bills.
Without the help of the local community, the organizers said this event would not have happened.
“Cpl. Kelly was always eager to get the job done. Always wore a smile. He was a pleasure to work with,” said Jared Kreamer, co-organizer for Cpl. Shawn Kelly event.
“It’s sad that we are called together to do this for any officer, any first responder. But it’s our turn to wrap our arms and love around them and show them that we’re here for them the way they’ve always been here for us,” Kreamer said.
The owner of Servpro, Mike Reed, said an event like this would typically take months of planning but with everyone being so eager to contribute, it was possible.
“To put this together within seven days, you normally would need seven months to put something like this on. This ain’t just about medical bills but this is about sustaining him and his family during this whole duration. And we’re hoping for a recovery very soon,” said Reed.
“The love these people have for donating their time, the equipment, their money, or products. It’s great,” Kreamer said.
The organizers said the community will be at the old Albertson’s in Denham Springs collecting donations for however long it takes and they are pushing to sell out about 5,000 meals.
