In his eight-year run at ESPN, Marc Spears has reported on Andre Iguodala’s entry into the world of venture capital, Dirk Nowitzki’s interracial marriage and Herb Jones’ frugality.
On Tuesday, Spears — a senior NBA writer for Andscape — will speak about how race, sports and culture connect at Loyola University. The event starts at 7 p.m. in the Nunemaker Auditorium and is free for anyone to attend.
Spears, who in 2023 received the Curt Gowdy Media Award and was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, has worked for ESPN since 2016. Andscape, the ESPN vertical Spears writes for, is a Black-led media platform that tells stories about Black identity.
Spears covered the Denver Nuggets for the Denver Post from 1990-2007 and then worked as the Boston Celtics beat writer for the Boston Globe from 2007-09. He became a national NBA reporter in 2009. Spears spent eight years at Yahoo Sports! before making the jump to ESPN. He has covered 18 NBA Finals.
Gregory Lee Jr., who is a visiting professor at Loyola, worked with Spears at the Boston Globe. Lee said Tuesday’s event is about giving attendees the chance to hear “from someone on the ground — not only from an NBA standpoint but on the ground level of covering a major entity at the crossroads of race, culture and sports.”
Both Lee and Spears have Louisiana ties. Lee is a New Orleans native. Spears received a master’s degree in sports business management from LSU.
