1. WHAT WE LEARNED
These Tigers have some serious Kim Mulkey-inspired grit inside them. Trailing by 12 midway through the third quarter, 51-39, LSU seemed destined for more Final Four futility. But down nine to start the fourth quarter, a 9-0 run fueled a seemingly impossible comeback for a 79-72 victory that put LSU in its very first national championship game. The Tigers found a way by attacking Virginia Tech inside, holding an overwhelming 54-14 edge in paint points.
2. TRENDING NOW
Alexis Morris. So much of the focus going into this national semifinal was on the battle inside between All-American post players Angel Reese and Elizabeth Kitley. They put on a show: Reese had 24 and 12, Kitley 18 and 12. But it was Beaumont, Texas, native Morris who was the difference. With LSU down 59-50 to start the fourth quarter, she came out and hit a 3-pointer then scored on a drive to fuel the comeback, finishing with 27 points.
3. FINAL THOUGHTS
The Tigers made history Friday night, becoming the first LSU women’s or men’s team to win a Final Four game in 10 total tries. Truthfully, LSU has no business playing for a national title in just the second season of the Mulkey era. But here the Tigers are, awaiting the winner of Friday’s second semifinal between unbeaten South Carolina and Iowa. The Tigers will be an underdog, especially against the Gamecocks, but who knows what can happen?
