Teenager charged with murder after 11-year-old shot in car, BRPD says

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Matthew Fortenberry, 11, died from injuries after a shooting on Thursday night.

The shooting took place around 6:45 p.m. in the 5600 block of Crestway Avenue. Baton Rouge police said that Fortenberry was found seated inside a vehicle and died later at a local hospital.

A 17-year-old suspect was apprehended in the 6300 block of Greenwell Street, according to BRPD. The teenager was also taken to a local hospital after being shot. BRPD said the suspect was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison and charged with first-degree murder, four counts of attempted first-degree murder, false imprisonment with a dangerous weapon and illegal discharge of a firearm.

BRPD is still seeking a motive in this deadly shooting. An investigation remains ongoing.
